GST Registration for Online Sellers: What You Need to Know

GST registration for online sellers and e-commerce businesses in India

Selling products online looks simple. You list your product, receive an order, pack it and ship it. But once your online business starts growing, GST becomes something you cannot ignore.

Whether you sell on Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, your own website or any other e-commerce platform, it is important to understand how GST impacts your business. The rules are a little confusing, especially for new sellers.

So, let’s keep it simple.

Do Online Sellers Need GST Registration?

The answer is: it depends on what you sell, where you sell and how you sell it.

Earlier, online sellers generally had to get GST registration when selling through e-commerce operators covered by the GST TCS provisions. However, the rules were changed from October 1, 2023.

Eligible small sellers of goods can now get an exemption from mandatory GST registration when selling through eligible e-commerce operators, but only if they meet the prescribed conditions.

For example, the seller generally needs to sell goods within only one State or Union Territory and should not make inter-state supplies. The seller also needs a valid PAN and must complete the required enrolment on the GST portal before making such supplies.

So, don't simply assume that a small online seller either definitely needs GST registration or definitely doesn't need it. Your actual business model matters.

When Is GST Registration Important for Online Sellers?

GST registration becomes important in several common situations.

If your business has a turnover above the relevant turnover threshold you may have to register. The applicable threshold may differ depending on the nature of supply and the State or Union Territory.

Your business activities may also be subject to a compulsory registration requirement and you may need to register.

Under Section 24, the GST law contains special provisions for the taxable supplies made by a seller through an e-commerce operator. However, the later exemption for eligible small goods sellers means you should check the conditions before making a decision.

This is where many new sellers get confused.

What About Amazon, Flipkart and Other Platforms?

If you are selling through an e-commerce marketplace, then the platform may have its own set of seller requirements relating to GSTIN, invoices and tax information.

For a registered seller, GSTIN becomes a part of regular business compliance. You also need to maintain proper sales records and issue invoices as per GST rules.

The e-commerce operator may also have TCS requirements for applicable transactions. The GST regime, the CBIC said, has specific provisions for collection of tax at source on supplies made through qualifying e-commerce operators.

So check the platform’s requirements and your GST position before opening your seller account.

How to Apply for GST Registration as an Online Seller?

If your business comes under the GST registration, then the application is done online through the GST portal.

The process typically includes:

Go to the GST portal and initiate a new registration.

Enter your PAN, mobile number and email details.

Verify the required OTPs.

Complete the registration application.

Upload the required business and address documents.

Complete authentication or verification as applicable.

Submit the application and track the ARN.

After approval, download your GST registration certificate and GSTIN.

The GST registration rules require applicants to provide PAN, mobile number, email address and State or Union Territory details through the prescribed registration process.

Documents Usually Needed

The exact documents vary depending on the business structure, but common documents required for online sellers include:

  • PAN Card (Permanent Account Number)
  • Aadhaar or any other valid ID proof
  • Proof of business address
  • Bank account details (if applicable)
  • Image
  • Constitution documents (of the business, if applicable)
  • Details of authorized signatory or partners as applicable

Keep your paperwork neat and up to date. A small bug in the application can cause unnecessary delays.

GST Compliance After Registration

Getting a GSTIN is not the end of the work.

Once you are registered, you also need to take care of your GST compliance. This may include keeping records of sales and purchases, issuing proper GST invoices, availing eligible input tax credit and filing the relevant GST returns.

Online sellers should also maintain well-organized marketplace reports, order details, invoices, returns and cancelations.

It may sound like extra work, but good records make things much easier later.

Why Should Online Sellers Take GST Seriously?

Online businesses can grow quickly. One month you may have only a few orders, and a few months later you could be handling hundreds.

That's why it is better to understand GST from the beginning.

Proper GST compliance also makes your business look more organized when you deal with suppliers, customers and other businesses. And if you are looking to grow to other states, or to increase your online sales your tax requirements may change.

Bcoz of this, don't wait until there is a problem to check your GST position.

Final Thoughts

GST registration for online sellers is not exactly the same for every seller. Your product, turnover, selling method, location and type of e-commerce platform can all matter.

In certain circumstances, some sellers of small eligible goods may not be required to register compulsorily. Other online sellers may be required to register under GST and comply on regular basis.

If you're unsure about your circumstances, seek professional advice before launching or expanding your online business.
